The Grade 5 programme at Kingstree Private School continues to develop learners’ independence, critical thinking, and academic skills as they progress through the Intersen Phase. Aligned with the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) and the National Curriculum Statement, the programme balances structured learning, practical activities, and values-based education to support holistic development.

This year, Grade 5 welcomes learners aged 10–11 years from diverse linguistic and socio-economic backgrounds. Individual learning needs are supported through differentiated instruction, continuous assessment, and personalised guidance.

The Grade 5 programme provides a safe, nurturing, and stimulating environment, encouraging learners to take ownership of their learning while building confidence, resilience, and character.

  • Home Language:Learners continue to strengthen literacy skills through reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Emphasis is placed on comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, creative and transactional writing, and oral communication. Activities include guided reading, storytelling, writing tasks, and group discussions, promoting fluency, confidence, and effective communication.
  • First Additional Language:Learners develop basic conversational, reading, and writing skills in a second language. Emphasis is placed on listening, speaking, reading, and writing in practical contexts, while fostering cultural awareness and communication confidence.
  • Mathematics:Mathematics focuses on problem-solving, number operations, fractions, measurement, geometry, patterns, and data handling. Learners apply concepts to real-world situations using hands-on activities and collaborative exercises to strengthen understanding and logical thinking.
  • Natural Sciences & TechnologyNatural Sciences encourages curiosity and investigation, covering topics such as life and living, matter, energy, and the environment. Technology develops problem-solving, design, and practical skills through structured projects, innovation tasks, and hands-on learning.
  • Social Sciences:Social Sciences includes Geography and History. Learners explore maps, environments, early societies, South African and world history, heritage, and citizenship. Lessons develop critical thinking, empathy, and an understanding of their role in the community.
  • Life Skills:Life Skills encompasses Personal and Social Wellbeing, Creative Arts, and Physical Education. Learners engage in activities that foster teamwork, emotional awareness, creativity, physical fitness, and healthy habits, while integrating Christian values and character development.

Grade 5 at Kingstree provides learners with a solid academic and personal foundation, encouraging growth, curiosity, and responsibility as they advance through the Intermediate Phase.

Grade 5 at Kingstree Private School builds on the foundations established in Grade 4, further developing learners’ independence, critical thinking, and academic confidence. The programme is CAPS-aligned and designed to deepen subject knowledge while continuing to support holistic development across all areas of learning.

Teaching at this level encourages active participation, collaboration, and responsibility. Learners are guided to think more critically, apply knowledge across subjects, and develop effective study habits in preparation for the upper Intermediate Phase.

Daily routines and classroom activities are intentionally designed to support:

  • Social and emotional development – fostering self-discipline, teamwork, and resilience

  • Cognitive development – strengthening comprehension, analytical thinking, and problem-solving skills

  • Language and communication – expanding vocabulary, written expression, and oral presentation skills

  • Physical development – promoting coordination, physical fitness, and healthy living

  • Critical thinking and creativity – encouraging inquiry, reasoning, and independent thought

Entry requirements

The purpose of Grade 5 is to strengthen academic competence and learner independence as part of the Intersen Phase journey. Through a structured and supportive curriculum, learners develop the skills, confidence, and responsibility required for success in Grades 6 and 7.

Parents or guardians are required to submit the following documents at enrolment:


Registration Fee (R 700, non-refundable in cash)

Passport Size Photos of the Learner (x2)

Copy of Birth Certificate (x1)

Copy of Parent’s or Guardian’s ID/Passport (x1)

Copy of Health Card (Immunisation Card)

Proof of Address not older than Three (3) Months (x1)

Proof of employment (pay-slip or 3-month bank statement) not older than three (3) months (x1)

Previous school report and transfer letter

Important: If your child does not have a South African birth certificate with an ID number. You must please provide a copy of the child’s passport or Asylum.

Curriculum


Home Language – reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary development, writing, and oral communication.

First Additional Language – listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in a second language.

Mathematics – number operations, fractions, measurement, geometry, data handling, and problem-solving

Natural Sciences & Technology – scientific inquiry, life and living, matter and materials, and basic technology concepts.

Social Sciences – Geography and History, focusing on environments, maps, heritage, and early societies.

Life Skills – Personal and Social Wellbeing, Creative Arts, and Physical Education.
